How I got my Google rankings back!

You might remember a few weeks back that my organic search rankings took a big hit because of Google’s recent algorithm change.

Before that time I was generating over $90k/month in ‘free’ SEO traffic:

Then after Google’s algorithm change, my traffic was cut nearly in half:

Having to face a global pandemic AND losing half of my website traffic was no fun:

But I didn’t let it get me down.

Instead, I went to work and did everything I could to get my rankings back.

So, for the last 5 weeks I’ve been working like a madman to improve my Google rankings.

And guess what?

In a short little time, I was able to get most of my rankings back!!

Here is where I stand today:

So, without further ado, here is exactly what I’ve been up to in the last few weeks to turn things around.
Roundup ArticlesOne thing I observed of Google’s new algorithm change is that it seems to strongly favor roundup articles.

What is a roundup article you ask?

Basically, it is a curation of other resources and other websites.

Put even more bluntly, it is an article that links to and directly promotes your competitors.

The idea is, that Google is all about helping the user, and so when a user is searching for something they probably are looking for a curated list of resources or website links, rather than one website in particular.

So for example, if someone is searching for the term ‘Financial Services Website Design’ they are probably interested in seeing a curated list of the best financial services website out there, rather than finding a single web page about financial services website design.

So, that’s what I did. In the last 5 weeks, I’ve created about 7 pages ranging from Financial Services, Construction, SaaS, and Restaurants.

And many of them are ranking well.

Here is a roundup article I did on ‘Financial Services Website Design’:

It’s basically a big long list of screenshots and links of other financial services websites. And to be clear, most of these are websites that I did not design or have anything to do with. I’m effectively promoting other people’s websites.

By using this tactic, I am able to be the #1 result for ‘Financial Services Website Design’:

And I’ve been able to do the same thing for other keywords like ‘Construction Website Design’

One thing I’ve learned about Google is you can’t fight them and you can’t trick them.

So instead you’ve got to just go with what they want.

So if they want to reward roundup articles in their search results, then okay fine, I’m going to go all in with round-up articles.
But how do I make money from this? You might be saying to yourself. Okay, great, so you’re getting more traffic but are you getting any business off of these articles?

Well, if you can believe it, my conversion rates have actually INCREASED!?

Here are traffic and conversion rates from January-May when I had my previous ‘Financial Services  Website Design’ article which was a more traditional and ‘salesy’ article:

So in that 5 month period, I received 188 visits to that particular page and got three conversions, which is a conversion rate of 1.6%

After I switched over to the ‘new’ roundup format, here are my stats:

So in less than three months, I’ve received 124 visits to that page with 4 conversions, which is a conversion rate of 3.23%!! Which is more than double my previous conversion rate.

Weird huh?

Anyway, I’m going with it. So I’ll be pumping out these roundup articles till the cows come home.

The best part is, these roundup articles are super easy to make.

Previously, it took me hours to write out quality articles. And the domain-specific knowledge was such that I really had to write the articles myself.

But with the new roundup format, I’m able to hand these off to other people on my team without any drop in quality.

Roundups are not the only thing I’ve been doing and I’ll cover other tactics I’ve been using in future messages.

Hope you found this helpful and I encourage you to try this format out on your own business.

I know these are pretty crazy and trying times and it’s been gratifying to know that I’m still able to make improvements to my business in spite of the circumstances we are confronted with.

So keep your head up and keep fighting the good fight!
